Music
David Aird is a London based multi-instrumentalist musician, producer, singer and performer. Working mostly with electronics but also incorporating histrionic vocal improvisation, maudlin crooning, and composition for chamber ensemble, he makes his own music under the name Vindicatrix and has released several records on Mordant Music, Scum Yr Earth, purge.xxx and Cellule75 to critical acclaim.
Vindicatrix has performed in major venues around Europe such as Berlin’s pre-eminent techno club Berghain and creates special concerts for festivals, such as the Foreign Affairs Festival at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, involving live bands and onstage special effects. Active in the experimental and performance art music circles, and known for his avant-garde collaborations, two of Vindicatrix’s major projects in 2026 were The Basement, performed in Copenhagen and HIAR performed at Bolding Gallery in Mayfair, London.
Vindicatrix provided the score and recorded instrumentals for The Basement, a durational opera held at Vermilion Sands in Copenhagen. The performance was created by the collective TLC23 (Katie Shannon & Keira Fox) along with Joachim Hamou and explores themes under the idea of loitering and displacement in various essences. Drawing on groups born from not belonging, boredom, destitution, and in aftermaths of displacement in both individual and wider worldly social upheavals, the idea of ‘loitering’ as a means to have placement and a sense of community within broken infrastructures and in a time of state controlled, surveillance and policed public space.
Vindicatrix also composed the musical soundscapes and provided live sound for HIAR, a heavy performance art piece written and performed by long-time collaborator Keira Fox alongside Louis Backhouse. The piece explores state violence, gender weaponization, and practical resistance in 1980s Northern Irish women’s prisons.
